Application Guidelines for Atomic Energy Scholarship Program of China in 2024 at SYSU

    In accordance with the prospectus of Atomic Energy Scholarship (AES) Program of China released by the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA) and the Ministry of Education of China (MOE), as well as the actual conditions of Sun Yat-sen University, this application guide is formulated.

I. Introduction of the Scholarship

    AES Program of China was jointly initiated by CAEA and MOE with the aim of fostering outstanding young talents to work in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy, attaining sustainable development goals of nuclear science and technology, and achieving social-economic well-beings.

    Sun Yat-sen University, the institution accredited under the program, is recruiting international students (master's degree and doctoral degree) for this scholarship program from all over the world. The final admission results are contingent on the approval of the expert review from the CAEA, the MOE, and the China Scholarship Council (CSC).

II. Eligibility

    1. Applicants should be non-Chinese citizens with valid foreign passports.

    2. Applicants must maintain good health and satisfy the physical standards necessary for applying for a student visa or residence permit.

    3. For those pursuing a master's degree in China, they must have a bachelor's degree with great academic performance and be under the age of 35. For those pursuing a doctoral degree in China, they must have a master's degree with great academic performance and be under the age of 40.

    4. Applicants should be friendly to China, hardworking and diligent in their studies with excellent academic performance, upstanding and law-abiding, without any records of violations of the rules and regulations of their school, or any other security penalties or criminal records.

    5. English Proficiency

    Applicants must provide their TOEFL iBT transcripts (79 points or higher, 15 or higher in each subject) or IELTS (6.5 points and higher, 5.5 or higher in each subject). Applicants who have taken courses instructed in English can submit proof of English language proficiency issued by their former school. Upon verification by SYSU, these applicants may be exempted from providing English level certificates.

III. Coverage

    The scholarship covers tuition fees, university dormitory and comprehensive medical insurance. The coverage and its standard are subjected to the document released by CSC in the same year.

IV. Application Procedure

    1. Online Registration on the CSC Website

    Please visit the Chinese Government Scholarship Information System (http://studyinchina.csc.edu.cn or http://www.campuschina.org). Once there, please select project type (Type B) and the Atomic Energy Scholarship Program of China, fill the application information (code of Sun Yat-sen University: 10558), and submit the application online. After the completion of online application, please print the Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship.

    2. Online Application via Sun Yat-sen University

    Apply on the website of Sun Yat-sen University. Applicants should apply before April 30, 2024 on the application website: https://apply.sysu.edu.cn. Applicants are required to register an account, proceed to select the “2024 The Atomic Energy Scholarship Program of China”, and submit the specified application materials as follows:

    (1) Application Form for the Chinese Government Scholarship

    Please download the Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship from the Chinese Government Scholarship Information System. Please complete filling out the form and sign the last page, scan it, and then upload it. 

    (2) A valid ordinary passport and a personal profile photo

    The passport should not expire before December 31, 2024. Please renew the passport if needed. Applicants who are staying in China at the time of application should provide a scanned copy of their passport pages with the Chinese visa or residence permit page, and entry seal.

    Those who have acquired foreign nationality and were once residents of the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR and Taiwan region must submit a certificate of cancellation of household registration or a certificate of withdrawal of Chinese nationality, or submit an official document issued by the Chinese diplomatic representation and consular authorities certifying that they do not hold Chinese nationality.

    (3) Diploma, certificates and verification reports

    Applicants pursuing master's degree who have graduated from universities within the Chinese Mainland should submit the Record of Electronic Registration of Academic Certificates from the Ministry of Education and the Online Verification Report of Chinese Higher Education Degree for Bachelor's degrees, available on Chinese Higher Education Student Information website (https://www.chsi.com.cn). For applicants pursuing master's degree who graduated from universities outside the Chinese Mainland , they should submit Verification of Foreign Academic Degrees for Bachelor's degrees, accessible on the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchanges (https://www.cscse.edu.cn). Students yet to graduate before the application deadline can submit a pre-graduation certificate issued by their university. Those who fail to provide their Bachelor's degree certificate before registration will have their admission revoked.

    Applicants pursuing doctoral degree who have graduated from universities within the Chinese Mainland should submit the Record of Electronic Registration of Academic Certificates from the Ministry of Education and the Online Verification Report of Chinese Higher Education Degree for both Master's and Bachelor's degrees, available on Chinese Higher Education Student Information website (https://www.chsi.com.cn). For applicants pursuing doctoral degree who graduated from universities outside the Chinese Mainland , they should submit Verification of Foreign Academic Degrees for both Master's and Bachelor's degrees, accessible on the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchanges (https://www.cscse.edu.cn). Students yet to graduate before the application deadline can submit a pre-graduation certificate issued by their university. Those who fail to provide their Master’s degree certificate before registration will have their admission revoked.

    (4) Complete transcripts of studies

    Applicants for master's degree must submit transcripts of undergraduate issued and stamped by the academic affair department or relevant student administration department of the applicants' university. Applicants who will not graduate before the application deadline can submit their most recent transcript issued by their university. Those who fail to provide a complete transcript of undergraduate studies before registration will have their admission revoked.

    Applicants for doctoral degree must submit transcripts of undergraduate and master program issued and stamped by the academic affair department or relevant student administration department of the applicants' university. Applicants who will not graduate before the application deadline can submit their most recent transcript issued by their university. Those who fail to provide a complete transcript of undergraduate and graduate studies before registration will have their admission revoked.

    (5) English language proficiency certificate

    Applicants of English-taught programs should submit TOFEL, IELTS certificate, or any proof of having taken program instructed in English.

    (6) Plan of study and research in China 

    Applicants for master's and doctoral degrees must submit a plan of study and research in China. The plan should be over 1000 characters and encompass various aspects including, but not limited to, relevant research or working background, past achievements in academic research, comprehensive study and research plan for the doctor program, and career goal after graduation. If applicants have published papers, please submit abstracts of the published papers. (see Attachment 1 for template)

    (7) Two letters of recommendation

    The letters of recommendation for applicants for master's and doctoral degrees must bear the signature of professors, associate professors, or senior professionals in the academic field relevant to the applicants' chosen field of study. (see Attachment 2 for template)

    (8) Report of physical examination and result of blood test 

    The physical examination results must be endorsed by the hospital and obtained within six months prior to the submission date . Those who are living in the Chinese mainland with a valid foreign residency permit or permanent foreign permanent resident ID card can use these documents as substitutes for Foreigner Physical Examination Form. (see Attachment 3 for template)

    (9) If the applicant is employed, a certificate of employment from the employer must be submitted, with the job title and description indicated.

    (10) Certificate of Non-Criminal Record

    The applicant must provide a valid non-criminal record (or police clearance certificate) issued by local authorities; the document should be issued within six months prior to the date of application submission.

    (11) Supporting documents

    Applicants can submit award certificates or certificate of certain experience as supporting documents.

    (12) Commitment letter

    The application information should be true, legal and valid. Please print and sign the document before uploading it to the system. (see Attachment 4 for the template)

    (13) Applicants Information Form

    The Personal Information Form is generated automatically by the International Student Management System. After printing and signing it, please upload the completed form back to the system.

    Note: All application documents should be in either Chinese or English. In case the documents are in another language, their notarized translation in Chinese or English must be attached to the original documents. Please ensure the accuracy when filling the applicant's email address, WeChat number, and contact phone number within the system, as notification regarding supplementary documents will be sent via email from admissions@mail.sysu.edu.cn. Failure to submit required supplementary documents on time, providing notarized certificates that do not meet the specified criteria, or providing inaccurate information will result in unsuccessful applications and all the expenses are to be borne by the applicants.

V.  Majors for International Students

    Please refer to Attachment 5 for the Catalog of the Atomic Energy Scholarship Program of China (Master & Doctoral Degree) at SYSU in 2024. Applications for majors outside the above range will be considered invalid.

VI. Application Deadline (Beijing Time)

    April 30, 2024

VII. Selection Procedures

    1. Qualification Review

    SYSU will review the foreign status, highest academic qualification, academic performance, Chinese language proficiency, study plan, and recommendations of applicants and determine the assessment list.

    2. Assessment

    Assessment will be organized by admission teams of each school/department in one of the following methods: (1) Interview; (2) Interview and written examination. The admission team of each school/department will notify those who have passed the qualification review of the specific assessment method, location and time.

    3. Conditional Admission

    SYSU will select applicants based on their qualifications and interview assessment results. 

    4. Admission Policy

    The ultimate admission decision will be contingent upon the outcome of the expert evaluation conducted by the CAEA, the MOE and the CSC. Upon the confirmation of admission, successful applicants will receive an electronic Admission Letter and a Confirmation Form for Foreign Students Coming to China via email (admissions@mail.sysu.edu.cn). It is imperative that applicants provide an accurate and functional email address to ensure receipt of these documents.

    5. Study in China

    Admitted applicants must apply for an X1 visa at the Chinese embassy or consulate using the Admission Letter and the Visa Application Form for Study in China. Holders of X1 visa must complete residential procedures at local public security departments within 30 days of entry into China. Failure to adhere to this requirement may lead to the cancellation of admission. It is important to note that international students with expired visas or residential documents are not permitted to reside or study on the campus premises.

VIII. Other Notes

    1. Admitted students must complete registration procedures according to the designated registration date and location specified in the Admission Letter; Early registration is not permitted. Failing to register within the stipulated timeframe without prior approval will result in the forfeiture of admission qualifications. Scholarship recipients will also face disqualification under such circumstances.

    2. In accordance with the regulations and requirements set forth by the Ministry of Education, SYSU will conduct a physical examination and admission eligibility review for all admitted applicants. Those who fail to meet the admission criteria or are found to have submitted fabricated for falsified materials will be disqualified from admission or student status. Scholarship recipients will face disqualification in such instances.

    3. Admitted students will undergo an annual scholarship review of their performance for scholarship renewal purposes. Those who fail the review will face suspension or disqualification of the scholarship.
